Our Church History

In November of 1903, under the leadership of pastor Charles Martin, 18 charter members organized the Missionary Baptist Church of Paintsville. The Missionary Baptists along with two other separate congregations shared a facility on the corner of Church Street and Second Street in Paintsville. As all three congregations began to grow, further expansion of facilities was needed. The Missionary Baptists sold their interest in the property to another congregation in May 1906 and began meeting in the Paintsville School building. This congregation would soon become known as the First Baptist Church of Paintsville.

Construction of a new facility on the corner of Fourth Street and College Street began soon after, and the dedication of the church's new facility was held on Sunday, February 2nd, 1908. The church's current facility (330 College Street) was purchased in December of 1956 and the congregation began gathering for worship here in 1967.

It is our church's prayer that the God-centered, Christ-exalting, gospel-saturated, Bible-teaching foundation and direction that has been established in our congregation will be embraced and expanded by coming generations for the advancement of God's kingdom in Paintsville. To God be the glory, great things He has done!

What to Expect

Congregation

Our congregation is a mix of people of all ages and backgrounds. And the range of those who attend goes from a single person to multi-generation families. Dress trends toward casual/business-casual, though you will see everything from jeans to suits. We are a friendly church and the chances are that someone will greet you when you visit; still, we encourage you to introduce yourself.

Sunday Schedule

On Sunday morning at 9:45 AM we come together for an hour for Bible study and fellowship in our Sunday School classes. We have a full offering of Sunday School classes for all ages. Following Sunday School, we begin our Sunday worship service at 11:00 AM. On Sunday evenings, we return at 6:30pm for another worship service. Our youth and children also gather during this time for a time of instruction from God's Word.

Music

The music we sing in the worship service is a blend of old and new. With joy we sing truth about God using centuries-old hymns all the way up to doctrinally-rich modern choruses. We delight in congregational singing as we sing together with "one voice" unto the Lord.

Corporate (Gathered) Worship Service

Our morning service formally begins at 11:00 AM. During this time, we sing several songs, pray, hear Scripture read, give our offerings and tithes, and receive a sermon.

Sermons

The preaching at FBC is generally expositional – meaning that it seeks to explain and apply a particular passage of the Bible. Sermons usually last around thirty to forty-five minutes and strive to include exegesis (detailed explanation of the text), doctrinal teaching, exhortation, and application. Since all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable, we preach earnestly from the Old Testament and the New Testament. All preaching is filtered through the Gospel, the Bible’s main message of God saving sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

At the end of the sermon, the pastor will offer a moment of invitation (to receive the gospel; to turn from one’s sin and turn to Christ as Lord and Savior) and we will sing a hymn to afford the opportunity for anyone to respond to the gospel. A typical service is finished by 12:15 PM. After the service people often linger for fellowship, discussing the sermon or the events of the past week.
